Water Treatment and Distribution in Communities in Developing Countries
Dr. David H. Manz, P. Eng., P. Ag. (2007)
The objective of this paper is to identify, describe and assess the challenges facing the successful implementation of community-scale water treatment and distribution in developing countries. With a good understanding of the ‘real’ problems that need to be overcome, it is possible to identify ‘real’ solutions. Though the challenges may seem daunting solutions are now available and will be the topic of several future papers which describe how the BioSand Water Filtration (BSF) technology and its related filtration technology, the Low Operating Head Polishing Sand Filter (LHPF) can be used to provide water treatment solutions for communities in developing countries around the world.

Health Impact Study Summary: Dominican Republic
Dr. David H. Manz, P. Eng., P. Ag. (2007)
Summary of a recent study documenting the impact of the introduction of the household BioSand Water Filter technology on the health of individuals and families was recently reported. The study was designed and performed by Dr. Mark Sobsey of the University of North Carolina. Funding came from a wide variety of government and nongovernmental organizations including many Rotary International clubs across the United States and Canada. Other groups such as Samaritan’s Purse and the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology had helped fund preliminary laboratory work. The results of the study were announced at a the recent Thirsting to Serve Conference sponsored by District 6290 of Rotary International in Grand Rapids Michigan on February 2007.

The
Household Concrete Design: BSF Technology
Dr. David H. Manz, P. Eng., P. Ag. (2007)
This paper describes the development and the present design of the concrete household BioSand Water Filter in a manner easily understood by readers who may or may not have advanced training in water treatment engineering. T: The slow sand filter, or Biosand Water Filter, in uniquely capable of filtering a wide range of contaminants, both chemical and biological. It is furthermore suited for applications by its characteristics of low cost and indefinite
scalability.

Toxicant and Parasite Challenge of Manz
Intermittent Slow Sand Filter
G. Palmateer, D. Manz, A. Jurkovic, R. McInnis, S. Unger, K. K. Kwan, B. J. (1999)
ABSTRACT: Important considerations in the development and maintenance of safe water supplies is the availability and use of efficient, inexpensive, and appropriate technology for removing microbial hazards, parasites, and toxicants. The Manz intermittent slow sand filter was known to be user friendly, small enough to fit into the smallest kitchen, and could remove up to 97% of the fecal coliforms present in the raw water before treatment by the Manz filter. This filter was evaluated for its ability to remove parasitic cysts and toxicants as well as bacteria.
